Intermittent Fasting On Ketogenic Diet | A Better Way


In this video we’ll discuss intermittent fasting

fasting on a ketogenic diet. This is an important topic because when I’m
in my clinic working with these different patients what I typically find is that a lot
of people try to do intermittent fasting because they saw something about it on the internet
but they’re trying to do it with a diet that doesn’t service intermittent fasting well. Let me give you a couple examples. So, first of all, I see a lot of people who
are doing the vegan diet who are trying to do intermittent fasting, and they struggle
a lot. The reason for this is because they’re following
a very restrictive diet and then they’re following a restrictive eating pattern. As a result, they create a very restrictive
lifestyle that is not sustainable. Now, another variation that I see, people
are trying to follow the standard American diet. A diet that’s high in sugar, carbohydrates,
toxicity because you’re consuming a lot of preservatives and artificial flavors and colors,
and so, you want to make sure that if we’re following that diet, we are not doing intermittent
fasting at the same time because you’re not going to be getting proper issues and you’re
going to cause some issues for yourself. And so, the standard American diet is also
a very challenging diet to follow when intermittent fasting. Now, one of the best diets to follow when
intermittent fasting is going to be the ketogenic diet, or a low carb diet and what I mean by
that is, you don’t have to follow the ketogenic diet to the point where you’re measuring your
blood ketones and you’re making sure you never come out of ketosis, you could actually do
a good low carb diet where you’re just allowing a little bit more carbs in your diet and follow
intermittent fasting and see great success and results with that as well. So, when I see my different patients that
come into my clinic. Essentially what I always tell them is that
following ketogenic diet or a low carb diet is going to always serve intermittent fasting
best because you’re not going to have big blood sugar swings and as a result of not
having big blood sugars swing you are going to find yourself not crashing throughout the
day and you’re not going to have those huge highs and lows where you’re getting angry
because you’re hungry, and then you can’t focus at all, and then all of the sudden you
just are glittery and you have a ton of energy, right? So, people who are following a good diet with
intermittent fasting don’t have that problem The other thing that’s great about this style
of diet is that it’s very satiating. That is very satiating. It holds you over for a long time until you
just have a nice, even kill of energy for a long time throughout the entire day because
you’re eating a diet that has high fat and it’s a very, very good source of energy for
the body. Now, you’re also going to have less craving
because it’s satiating, because you’re not having blood sugars, you’re going to have
less cravings. Some of the things people struggle with intermittent
fasting, one meal a day is really intense cravings. They just have a lot of hunger pain and a
lot of people don’t like that so, if we want to have less of that then make sure that we’re
following the ketogenic diet. Another reason it’s important is because we
want to make sure that we have a balanced nutrient profile like, if you’re following
the vegan diet, if you’re following the standard American diet you could have some nutrient
issues because one of the things is, first of all, these are diets that are restrictive
but also diets that just have really low quality foods in them and so, if we want to have a
balanced nutrient profile following a low carb diet that is going to be high in fat,
that’s going to be moderate in protein and low in carbohydrates, lots of veggies in it,
then that’s going to be the best way to get really optimal nutrient intakes so we don’t
put yourself into a micro-nutrient deficient. Now, last thing I want to mention here is
the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, which one you should do first. Some people say well, should I start intermittent
fasting and then transition into the ketogenic diet and I actually recommend in reverse that
you actually start the ketogenic diet and then transition into intermittent fasting. Because, when you start the ketogenic diet,
what’s going to happen is, you’re actually going to turn your body into a fat burning
machine and so, you start burning the fat on your body for energy and then, when you
go intermittent fasting and you’re going through those fasted periods, essentially, your body’s
always adapted and ready to go. Your body knows how to burn ketones for energy,
it knows how to burn that fat for energy. So, as a result, the intermittent fasting
is much, much easier to do. So, when we look at intermittent fasting and
the best diet to follow, make sure you’re following a low carb diet or a ketogenic diet. And, be sure to give this video a thumbs up,

    I'm doing low carb.. and IF.. 16 or 17 fasting time . But I've hit a platue for the past 2 months . I'm only 5 to 10 pounds from my goal but I can't seem to get there without cutting calories extremely . Which I don't want to do. Right now I think I eat plenty of fat and when I do eat I eat until I'm full. I'm not giving up, but I am frustrated.

    I do 16/8 model and it has given me great results

    I have problem doctor, am doing intermittent fasting along with keto. And sometimes am measuring my blood glucose level and ketosis, after fasting by 12 hours the level of ketosis above 5. But after eating even if there is no carbs in my meal , ketosis is becoming 1 or 1.5 maximum.
    What would be the solution to this matter?!?
    And why eating any thing not carbs, like salad or nuts will increase blood glucose levels?!?

    It was difficult for me to follow Keto so I did IF first and when I was enjoying IF I started with Keto. Enjoying both now! And with good results!

    I tried to go for no carbs and no sugars,and after 3 weeks I starting cheating on weekends, now I'm trying to go less carbs like 10 carbs daily

    I myself started I.F. before getting into KETO diet, just because I learned about I.F. earlier.
    To be honest KETO diet SAVED my I.F.. I was struggling so much to a point that I almost gave up I.F., then I started trying KETO diet — all my struggle simply disappeared. ALL of them.

    My 3 adult kids and I do the keto/omad and sometimes worrier style! Soooo flexible! Soooo satisfying! Soooo awesome! We've been doing both for almost a year and LOVING it! Can see no other lifestyle but this! Only regret is that I wished I had found this 30 years ago!

    Have been doing IF for about 2 months now. It has working out great! I've seen the results and working at it. I've been doing 18:6. I have had one big question on my mind. Can I drink beer during the 6 hour to substitute some of my calories? It sounds obvious, but I love craft beer. Any thoughts please?

    food for thought, someone help me to understand this: I want to do keto, omad and if all in one. My plan is 20/4. Within the 4 hrs I am starting with bone broth and leafy greens…then followed by my main keto meal, then followed by some fruit or pastry for desert. I am spreading out my eating over the 4 hours so the desert is within that 4th hour. Is there a reason why my eating would not be considered one meal? How should this affect my insulin which is my biggest worry?

    I have been doing IF before it became mainstream. I've been doing it since high school and I'm now 54 years old. I hate having breakfast that's the main reason I'm into IF (didn't know it was called IF then). At time I didn't understand why I always felt full upon waking up in the morning whether I had dinner or not the night before. I just simply follow what my body told me … which is eat when I am hungry. Jumping to keto didn't give me the keto rush that most people experience.

    So grateful that you actually answer the questions we ask and mine is…Dr Valter Longo does not recommend intermittent fasting longer than 12-13 hours other than his FMD. I have read and watched over 20 doctors that do like IF or OMAD? It is as usual a bit confusing.

    I actually discovered and applied IF 3 months before I even thought of starting a keto diet. I couldn't believe (even as a beer drinker and potato chip/popcorn fiend) how easily my body adapted to it. Then when I started on keto, it was a match made in heaven. 🙂

    If quote "lots of veggies" are a homeric of a good diet then why wouldn't a vegan diet be healthful? There is no physical necessity to eat meat or dairy, and we can certainly point to plenty of people that do so that are eating an unhealthful diet.

    I have heard that while doing intermittenting fast – you can have 50 calories during this time, is this correct? Basically, I would like to have a tablespoon of heavy cream in my coffee, is this ok?
